This is specialized work in communications, supervising the activities of an assigned shift of Communications operators.
Work involves responsibility as a first-level supervisor on an assigned shift. Work is reviewed by the Communications Manager while in progress and for results accomplished. Work is also evaluated through assessment of written reports.

- Informs Communications Manager of any changes in the status of his/her shifts including absenteeism, equipment malfunctions, violations of departmental rules and regulations and any major incidents that may have occurred during shift
- Oversees the day-to-day operations, activities, and personnel on an assigned shift to ensure compliance of established guidelines, procedures, and policies; ensures appropriate staffing levels are maintained
- Monitors, documents and evaluates work performance of communications operators on his/her assigned shift, and participates in work performance evaluations for all communications operators
- Responsible for the effective supervision and administration to include staff development, training and performance management
- Advises and assists communications operators in all phases of work requiring his/her expertise
- Participates in compilation and implementation of operational procedures for the Communications section
- Reviews all reports, entries, logs, etc. generated by his/her shift for accuracy, completeness, and conformity to departmental rules and regulations
- Keeps shift members updated on any changes, both in law and operational policies
Minimum Qualifications
Licenses(s): Valid Georgia Driver's License
Education: Completion of a standard high school diploma, GED or equivalent from a regionally or nationally accredited school
Experience: Two (2) or more years' experience in the field of emergency services, including dispatching and call-taking; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
Certification(s): Successful completion of the Georgia Basic Communications Officer Training Course
Pre-employment requirements:
The following requirements are necessary for State certification (Rules of Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, Chapter 464-14):
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Have a high school diploma or it’s recognized equivalent
- Be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state and national level to disclose any criminal record
- Not have been convicted by any state or federal government of any crime, which could have resulted in imprisonment
- Must not have a pattern of law violations
- Possess good moral character
- Must be able to pass an exam for physical, emotional and mental fitness
- Complete a basic training course of 40 hours within the first six (6) months of employment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Thorough knowledge of Communications operations
- Thorough knowledge of the geography of the City of Conyers
- Thorough knowledge of radio signals and ten-codes
- Thorough knowledge of the general procedures governing emergency services
- Good knowledge of established City policy governing the administration of the Police Department
Skill and Abilities:
- Skill in operating a variety of radio equipment, computer equipment and telephone systems
- Skill in communication with nervous, confused or hysterical people while obtaining necessary and pertinent information
- Skill in communicating with subordinates, superiors, and the general public
- Skill in the use and care of all communication’s technical equipment
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and provide accurate, concise information to co-workers, uniform officers or to the general public
- Ability to act rationally and responsibly under pressure
- Ability to work various shifts, weekends, and/or holidays as deemed necessary by the Department
- Ability to communicate in a precise and clear manner by radio
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and telephonically, as well as be able to use Teletype Device for Deaf (TDD) equipment to communicate with the hearing impaired
- Ability to efficiently use all technical equipment in communications
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time at a workstation
- Ability to hear and comprehend several modes of communication occurring simultaneously; examples: phone, radio, personal computer, and alarms
- Ability to work shifts, weekends, nights and holidays
