Job Summary

This is semi-skilled and manual work in which some independent judgment is exercised in carrying out duties. Work involves more than usual physical strength and endurance, and is usually performed under close supervision. Verbal work orders are issued and work is inspected frequently.

Construction/Building Maintenance

  • Promptly and in a timely manner responds to building maintenance calls. 
  • Assist in various construction related functions such as, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical and building.
  • When necessary, properly operates a dump truck (under 36,000 GVW).
  • Properly uses appropriate cleaning chemicals to shampoo carpets and strip and wax vinyl composition floors at GIHP faculties. 

Landscaping 

  • With the use of hand powered and riding lawn mowers, keeps the lawn areas on, near and around the GIHP cut and free from debris.
  • Properly operates weed eater, chain saw, pressure washer and other related equipment to ensure the GIHP is clean and presentable at all times. 
  • Correctly uses hand powered equipment such as rakes, shovels, etc. to perform various landscaping duties at, near or around the GIHP.
  • Properly cleans and maintains all buildings and facilities in and around the GIHP. 

GIHP Events 

  • Properly maintains and cares for all horse stalls located in the GIHP. 
  • Assist other GIHP and City employee with basic set-up for scheduled events.
  • Ensures the public address systems is set up and working properly. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Completion of a standard high school diploma, GED or equivalent from a regionally or nationally accredited school. Preferred but not required. 

Licenses(s): Valid Georgia Driver’s License.

Experience: One (1) or more years' experience in general construction, general maintenance, landscaping; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge of:

  • General safety practices and procedures. 
  • Operations of public address system. 

Skill and Abilities: 

  • Operate power tools and other various hand powered tools.
  • Assemble materials and construction rough products. 
  • Recognize hazardous waste.
  • Work around horses and riders. 
  • Interpret verbal and written instructions. 
  • Operate a two way radio.
  • Work as part of a team. 
  • Safely operate light construction equipment. 
  • Work shift work, including nights, weekends and holidays. 

Equipment used: Power tools, hand-powered tools, light construction equipment, etc. 

 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. 

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds.

The employee must frequently be able to climb ladders and withstand heights.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 

 

Working Conditions: 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including cold and high temperatures.

The employee must frequently be able to tolerate environments containing dust, dirt, grease, and horse manure and urine, as well negotiate uneven terrain, unassisted, while carrying objects up to fifty (50) pounds. 

The employee will occasionally work in ditches that may contain up to three (3) feet of water.

Often, the employee is required to work in confined spaces and maneuver low-clearance areas.
