This is semi-skilled and manual work in which some independent judgment is exercised in carrying out duties. Work involves more than usual physical strength and endurance, and is usually performed under close supervision. Verbal work orders are issued and work is inspected frequently.
Essential Job Functions

- Often performs as a member of the paving and patching crew by shoveling gravel and asphalt.
- Properly operates a chain saw in clearing rights-of-way.
- Actively performs as member of the construction crew.
- Safely operates a dump truck (under 36,000 G.V.W.), when necessary, No CDL required.
- Actively assists in work such as cleaning storm water catch basins, building sidewalks, and other construction jobs as needed.
- May help clean street signs.
- May be assigned to pick up bagged leaves, grass clippings.
- May be assigned to retrieve scrap metal from residents throughout the city.
- Often mows rights-of-way with mowers and weed eaters and operates backpack blower.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Completion of a standard high school diploma, GED or equivalent from a regionally or nationally accredited school.
Licenses(s): Valid Georgia Driver’s License.
Experience: Six (6) months experience in similar manual work; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Certifications: Ability to complete DOT flagger's course, or obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Basic techniques relating to road and concrete construction.
- State and local safety practices and procedures.
Skill and Abilities:
- The basic concepts of general construction principles.
- To assemble materials for construction projects.
- To understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- To communicate using a two (2) way radio.
- To establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and work in a team environment.
- To safely operate light construction equipment.
Equipment used: Small hand tools, cleaning supplies, and traffic flag.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds unassisted in uneven terrain. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to maneuver in low clearance areas.
Working Conditions:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including cold and high temperatures. The employee must be able to climb ladders and withstand heights, work in confined spaces, tolerate environments containing dust and dirt.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no direct reports.
