Job Description Summary: This s a law enforcement officer that works in the Police Department Training Unit.  This position will consist of assisting the Department Training Officer, DTO,  Work is performed under the supervision of the Department Training Lieutenant with the essential and training needs for the Police Department 

·         Assist in planning, scheduling, and conducting training activities for the department.

·         Document and maintain accurate records of all training provided.

·         Prepare and submit reports related to training programs.

·         Support the Department Training Officer in meeting departmental training requirements.

Minimum Education & Experience

Education: High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a sworn full time Georgia P.O.S.T. council certified Peace Officer with the City of Conyers Police Department; OR employed for five(5) years as a sworn full-time Georgia P.O.S.T. Council certified Peace Officer.

Strong understanding of law enforcement practices, report writing, and criminal and traffic law.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and able to learn and operate law enforcement databases and reporting software.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrates ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

License(s): Possession of a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Must be a certified peace officer in the State of Georgia, in good standing with the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST).

Certification(s): Minimum of Instructor Level 1

Field Training Officer Certification

Special Requirements: Must be willing to submit to a police background check and polygraph. Must not have a pattern of law violations.

  • ·         Coordinates the Field Training Program

o   Supervises and asses the department’s Field Training Officers (FTO);

o   Inspects the digital training records for each officer in the FTO program;

o   Conducts in-person assessments of officers in the FTO program in the field;

o   Reports to the DTO any incidents or issues that arise within the FTO program

  • ·         Maintains records of training activities:

o   Digital recordkeeping;

o   Hard copy/paper files;

o   Submits training completions to the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council

o   Serves as the point of contact for new recruits while attending the Police Academy

  • ·         Provides departmental training as assigned by the DTO
  • ·         Assists DTO with completion and tracking of annual training requirements
  • ·         Assists DTO with training requirements for new-hires during the on-boarding process
  • ·         Reviews case law for training needs
  • ·         Maintains a good understanding of Conyers police procedure
  • ·         Assists DTO with department Fleet management
  • ·         Works with the department’s quartermaster on equipment needs
  • ·         Creates lesson plans for new training
  • ·         Updates department training with current practices and legal requirements
  • Perform bailiff duties and share responsibilities as a part-time bailiff for City of Conyers Municipal Court or security screening officer.

·         Excellent knowledge of police practices, investigation techniques, case administration and adjudication.

·         Excellent knowledge of state and local laws as they relate to police duties.

·         Excellent knowledge of the police department’s Standard Operating Procedures.

·         Thorough knowledge of geography and population of the City of Conyers.

·         Skill in communicating effectively with subordinates, superiors and the general public in both verbal and written form.

·         Skill in the use and care of firearms.

·         Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to adopt effective and reasonable courses of action with regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances.

·         Ability to act rationally and responsibly under pressure.

·         Ability to use sufficient physical force to apprehend violators.

·         Ability to drive standard equipped vehicles.

·         Ability to exercise visual and motor coordination to drive safely at high speeds.

·         Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.

Working Conditions: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. 

This job is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. 

This job requires working nights, weekends and/or holidays and on-call after hours, as needed.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:This position has no direct reports unless it is an Officer while in FTO or an Officer involved in a training detail.

 

This position works under the supervision of the Training Lieutenant within the Support Services Division.
