Position Information

Department: Police

Purpose of Job: At the direction of the Community Engagement and Outreach Lieutenant, the D.A.R.E. Officer will provide Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) curriculum to elementary school students within the City of Conyers. The officer will also serve as a liaison with the schools and coordinate D.A.R.E. program activities with local school administrators, teachers, and parents.


The D.A.R.E. Officer is responsible for promoting drug abuse resistance education and positive decision-making among students through classroom instruction, community engagement, and mentorship. This role serves as a trusted liaison between the police department, schools, and families, fostering safe and supportive learning environments while reinforcing the values of respect, responsibility, and healthy lifestyles.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Minimum Education Level Required

Completion of a standard high school diploma, GED, or equivalent from a regionally or nationally accredited school.

Minimum Experience Level Required

Presently employed at the City of Conyers Police Department at the rank of Officer First Class.
Or
Possesses a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience as:
• A Georgia P.O.S.T. Council Certified Officer; or,
• An out-of-state Law Enforcement certification(s) as approved by the Chief of Police

Licenses(s)

Possession of a valid Georgia Driver’s License.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carries out the responsibilities of a Police Officer as required by the department's needs.
  • Deliver the D.A.R.E. curriculum in classrooms, following established lesson plans and program guidelines.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students, encouraging safe and healthy choices.
    Build and maintain effective relationships with school administrators, teachers, parents, and community partners.
  • Represent the police department at school functions, community events, and parent meetings to promote D.A.R.E. initiatives.
  • Prepare lesson materials, presentations, and activities to engage students and reinforce learning objectives.
  • Maintain accurate records of classroom instruction, program participation, and community outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with fellow officers and department leadership to evaluate and enhance program effectiveness.
  • Stay current on issues affecting youth, including drug trends, bullying, peer pressure, and online safety.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the mission of the police department and the D.A.R.E. program.
  • Perform bailiff duties and share responsibilities as a part time bailiff for City of Conyers Municipal Court or security screening officer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and departmental rules/policies.
  • Understanding of the D.A.R.E. curriculum, program objectives, and teaching strategies.
  • Knowledge of current youth issues, including substance abuse trends, bullying, peer pressure, and online safety.
  • Familiarity with classroom management techniques and child/adolescent development.
  • Knowledge of community policing principles and positive youth engagement strategies.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills to effectively deliver lessons to diverse student groups.
  • Organizational skills to manage lesson planning, scheduling, and recordkeeping.
  • Collaboration skills to work effectively with educators, law enforcement peers, and community partners.
  • Ability to complete assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to function under limited supervision.

 

Job Factors:

  • May be required to work on holidays, religious holidays, and weekends.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Must work cooperatively with others.

Job-Related Requirements

  • Requirements include vehicle operation, responsibility for the vehicle's safety, readiness, and operation, and must abide by the City of Conyers' safe driving policy.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain all qualifications of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council.
  • Must have a D.A.R.E. Officer Certification, or the ability to obtain the certification within six months.

 

Emergency Position

This position is designated as an emergency position requiring work attendance under all types of emergency conditions and special events. Examples of emergencies and special events include inclement weather, civil disturbance, major crime scenes, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations, concerts, large-scale assemblages, permitted events, or other incidents as determined by the officer’s chain of command.
